What Is Person-Centred Counselling?
Person-centred counselling is the approach that underpins my work as a counsellor. Developed by Carl Rogers, it is based on the belief that every person has the ability to grow, develop, and make meaningful changes in their life when provided with the right environment and support.
Rather than giving advice or telling you what you should do, person-centred counselling focuses on understanding your thoughts, feelings, and experiences from your perspective. You are the expert on your own life. My role is to listen, support, and walk alongside you as you explore what is happening for you.
Sometimes we know something doesn't feel right, but we struggle to understand why. We may feel stuck, overwhelmed, confused, or disconnected from ourselves and others. Having the opportunity to talk openly and honestly in a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space can help us gain greater self-awareness and understanding.
At the heart of person-centred counselling is the therapeutic relationship. Feeling heard, accepted, and understood can help us develop confidence in ourselves, recognise our strengths, and make decisions that feel right for us.
Person-centred counselling is not about being told what to do. It is about being supported to explore who you are, how you feel, and what you need, at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
